Concept
March 11th, 2011. We saw implications of our energy problems. We saw that resources are limited, and the energy that lights up our lives is fleeting. On that day, lights went out across Japan and our cities were plunged into darkness. Already, five years have passed. Today, the neon lights have returned to our buildings and advertisements blare out at us. The memory of that day has gradually faded, and it already seems as if those energy problems never happened. HIBANA treats March 11th as a calling, acting as an experiential device to reawaken our awareness of these energy issues that have been fading away from our consciousness. Turn the device’s handle to strike flint and send off sparks. The sparks give off an ephemeral light in the room. By making light on your own, you can get a sense for how impactful and how ephemeral the energy that lights our lives is.
